Soldotna Chamber of Commerce 2007
Individual “Devoted Service to Youth” Award
Making
a difference in the lives of our youth. This was just one of
the many statements that embodies this year’s recipient of
the Devoted Service to Youth award. The ability to
connect with the youth has allowed this person to transcend
boundaries and to wear many hats including those of a
parent, a counselor, a friend and when appropriate a
disciplinarian. Through encouraging students to make good
decisions both at school as well in our community, this
individual has truly led by example. This individual
is noted for the impressive level of respect with which he
treats young people. As a coach in Boys & Girls Club
programs, as well as in the soccer and basketball programs
at Soldotna Middle School, this individual brings a level of
enthusiasm to the table that is hard to match. Whether
through chaperoning youth dances or organizing track meets,
this individual strives to create a safe and fun environment
for students. We will never know the full extent to
which this individual has impacted formidable young lives as
the DARE Officer, but we do know that his compassion and
dedication to this community’s youth made him our unanimous
recipient of the 2006 Devoted Service to Youth award,
Officer Tony Garcia.

information back to all Alaska D.A.R.E. Officers. In
addition to the many seminars that the conference had to
offer, Officers Kelly George and Amanda Patton became
certified to teach the Supplemental Bullying Lesson. As
mentors, they will bring this certification back to Alaska
and train all of the D.A.R.E. Officers that attend the
Annual In-Service training held in October.
The
State D.A.R.E. Educator and Coordinator attended the
semi-annual regional meetings and participated in the
conference. Bob Galosich, Board President of D.A.R.E.
Alaska, Inc. attended the conference and was very
impressed. The conference seminars offered participants
some of the best information available!

The 4th annual D.A.R.E. Alaska,
Inc. Golf Tournament was held at Eagle Glen Golf Course
on the afternoon of June 29th. By all accounts, it was a
great success. Participants enjoyed good weather, the
course was in top notch condition, and we had twice as
many teams participating as in recent years. Our crew of
D.A.R.E. Board members and volunteers provided terrific
support to all golfers ensuring they were well fed,
photographed, and given an opportunity to win a really
nice boat at our hole-in-one competition. Dan Fagan, our
emcee for the event, entertained the golfers at the
follow-up picnic and ensured that all prizes found their
way to the right people. The winning teams are as
follows: 1st Place, Residential Mortgage with a score of
60; 2nd Place, North Star Behavioral Health
with a score of 60; and 3rd place, Alaska
Commercial Company with a score of 61.
Naomi Sweetman, our Executive Director, and our clerk,
Karl Wade, did great behind-the-scenes work to make this
our best tournament yet. And of course, a special thanks
to our sponsors, you were terrific. Without you, our
tournament could never happen and because of you, the
D.A.R.E. program will reach more students in Alaska. We
look forward to even greater success at our 2007 golf
tournament and hope to see you again next year!

The Yakutat
Department of Public Safety had a 5th grade culmination
at the Yakutat City School. The culmination
was a well-attended
ceremony. Following the culmination there was an
"overnighter" held inside the Yakutat School from 8:00
p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Each graduate invited two
friends to attend the event. During the event,
students played basketball, dodge ball, watched movies,
went swimming and ate pizza.
There was also a very
special attraction provided. With the help of
local donations, the YDPS was able to buy a 50' by 50'
inflatable racetrack and 12 remote control racecars.
The students, parents and chaperones had a great time at
the event.
